Sightseeing in Marrakech, Morocco

Set at the feet of the awe-inspiring Atlas Mountains, surrounded by the vastness of the desert, Marrakech is one of the most important cities in Morocco. Marrakech is a city that excites the senses as colour, noise and heady aromas ooze from every corner – it rewards the traveller ready to relinquish the guidebook, fold away the map and simply succumb to the allure of the city. It’s a destination in which to give in to curiosity and explore – you never know what treasures might emerge from amidst the hustle and bustle. However there are plenty of attractions in Marrakech that you’ll want to make time for.

Top of most travellers’ list is the Medina, the historical core of Marrakech. Watch as the Morocco of days gone by unfurls and the Marrakech you dreamed of becomes reality before your eyes; think snake charmers, street musicians and endless stalls spilling out onto the tangle of tiny streets.

Here you’ll find the most traditional riads in Marrakech, where you can experience sumptuous Moroccan style first-hand. If relaxation is what you’re seeking, the Medina is home to many traditional hammams – typical Moroccan baths – where you can indulge in a moment of pure, unspoilt pampering.

The focal point of the Medina is Djemaa el-Fna (also spelled Jamaa el Fna), the city’s most famous square. The square is the focal point of city life and is right by the souk, a traditional market selling everything you can imagine and more. Djemaa el-Fna counts the Koutoubia Mosque amongst its neighbours – this mosque is an emblem of Marrakech and its iconic minaret can be seen for miles around.

For a complete contrast and a glimpse into another side of Moroccan life, explore the district of Gueliz, also known as Ville Nouvelle, Marrakech’s most modern and European zone. Teeming with upmarket shops and restaurants, Gueliz is the place to enjoy the finer things in life.

Essaouira is the most popular city on the Atlantic cost. A big number of tourists that come to spend a few days in Marrakech also decide to spend a few days by the sea. The atmosphere is relaxed and in total contrast with the Marrakesh chaos. With a magnificent beach extended a few km south, Essaouria is also the most popular place to do windsurf and kite surf. The Atlantic winds can be very strong and so the name of “Wind City, Afrika”. There are also beaches with wild moving sand dunes that make this place a must at just a couple of hours drive from Marrakech.

For a moment of tranquillity in Marrakech visit the Palmeraie, a palm-filled oasis on the outskirts of the city. If you’re looking for villas in Marrakech, this is the place to stay. You can explore the area on a camel or a horse carriage ride for a unique experience.
